Inverted nipple correction

Inverted nipple correction

What is Inverted nipple correction?

A nipple which does not protrude but is retracted into the breast is known as an inverted nipple. It is caused by fibrous bands under the nipple keeping it pulled downward, and is generally accompanied by a lack of tissue supporting the nipple. Approximately 2 to 3% of Korean women are reported to have an inverted nipple. It can cause mastitis, or disturbance to lactation in severe cases as well as aesthetic problems.

Classification according to the degree of
inversion and operation method

  • If a temporary protrusion occurs through stimulus and remains for some time

Fibrous ligament tissue is extended through a small incision and is closed with a purse-string suture.

  • If a temporary protrusion doesn’t occur through stimulus, even if it does, it gets inverted immediately

It is corrected by cutting off fibrous ligament tissue including the lactiferous duct and other tissue filled in under the nipple

* Various surgical techniques can be used depending on the degree of inversion, but consultation with a specialist is required since surgery can damage the ability to breastfeed for severe cases.
